TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A longtime leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton has died.

Church officials say Bishop Emeritus John Smith died Tuesday after a long illness, but did not disclose further details. He was 83.

Smith served as the ninth bishop of the Trenton diocese, holding the post from 1997 until his retirement in 2010. He was a coadjutor bishop in the diocese for two years before that and also served as bishop of the Pensacola-Tallahassee Diocese in Florida from 1991-95.

A New Jersey native, Smith was ordained as a priest in 1961 and held numerous posts in the Archdiocese of Newark before joining the faculty of the Pontifical North American College in Rome in 1982.

He returned to Newark in 1986, becoming auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese two years later.
